a worry…

Posted on Saturday 29 July 2006

I’ve had a background worry ever since Bush got re-elected. I didn’t realize how much I’d hoped that he wouldn’t. I wasn’t excited about Kerry, more because I thought he looked and acted too much like an up-East Liberal, than anything about him personally. I was afraid they could trash him in their usual manner. When Bush won, I was crestfallen – much more than I expected. What anger I could muster was at the decent Christians who elected him. I just couldn’t believe they fell for it.

So about my worry. I’m worried that no matter how absurdly Bush acts, no matter how far down the wrongest of roads he takes us, the same Religious Right False Prophets and Neoconservative Machiavellians will be able to hoodwink the voters once again with their dirty tricks, their carefully constructed logical twists, and their appeal to post-911 fears. I think I lost my faith in the wisdom of the common man in November 2004.

It still worries me, but I’m more hopeful. The miserable polls help. Surprisingly, it helped that Ralph Reed lost here in Georgia. I don’t encounter nearly as much of that sarcastic hateful conservative banter that I heard for the first four years of Bush. I still think it hinges on the private consciences of the common people that live in the vast spaces between our cities. Are they going to label all of us who oppose this insanity as demons who are pushing off Abortion, Gay Marriage, etc. on them? Karl Rove has done such a magnificent job of imprinting people’s minds with the image of "Liberal," just like Hitler did with "Jew," or McCarthy did with "Communist," that my worry is that people will not be able to see above those simplistic rhetorical devices and recognize that Bush and his more devious cohorts are destroying the very country the voters think they’re preserving. There is nothing Godly about the White House right now.

Osama Bin Laden wanted to drive us crazy – and he succeeded. That carnage has taken us down a very crazy road. But we’ll also never get over the carnage of the Bush Administration. Our only hope is that the Phoenix can arise from the ashes and find a new place in the world that’s worthy of our own respect and the respect of our fellow nations. But, I’m still worried…

In my opinion, George W. Bush is presiding over the downfall of our country. I don’t think we’ll ever rise to the level of respect we once held, but perhaps that is good. It gave us the big head. I just want to be back up on an equal footing with other first world countries and not hated or dismissed.
