may the Force be with us…

It seems like more than eight years to me – when George Bush and Dick Cheney took over the Whiite House. Clinton had narrowly survived impeachment and had cast a cloud over the Democrats. The voting process was mangled in Ohio, and a cadre of Republican lawyers seized the Florida "reccount" bolstered by a Republican Supreme Court. The ranks of the American Enterprise Institute and the Project for a New American Century were emptied into the White House. Osama Bin Laden got a "bye" for eight months to plan 911. Americans were obsessed with Y2K, abortion, the Religious Right, Stem Cells, Rush Limbaugh, and Fox News.

It was a recipe for disaster and like all good recipes, it just took one thing to make it work. We lost 3000+ Americans in the World Trade Towers bombing, but we lost something else in the process. We rallied and covered our cars with American Flag magnetic stickers. Then we accepted the eight year reign of the most incompetent and unprincipled government in our history while we slid from somewhere good to skid row.

What worries me is that this election/campaign is proceeding as if it’s business as usual – election promises and silly accusations hurled back and forth. But it’s not business as usual. It’s a juncture where we either rise to our many challenges, or continue a slide that surpasses the fall of the Soviet Union. Maybe that’s what’s in the cards, but I sure hope not. Beside the fact that McCain is a Republican, beside the fact that he’s drunk the Bush/Cheney Koolade, beside the fact that he’s dumb as a post, he’s irresponsible. The only thing he has going for him is American Xenophobia, Rove’s dirty tricks machine, and the remnants of Cheney’s reign of sarcasm.

Barak Obama and Joe Biden have only two months to remind the American voter what the last eight years have really been about amid the smoke screen that is surely to come.
