When does skinny look too skinny? The question popped up Tuesday after an appearance by . . . another reed-thin starlet? Nope – former vice president Dick Cheney.

I suppose we got so used to hearing what they wanted us to hear [spin] that we don’t question what we’re told. What we’re seeing here is very unlikely voluntary weight loss. It looks like what is called Cardiac Cachexia or Cardiac Wasting. It is a syndrome of generalized tissue wasting seen in severe chronic heart failure and is an ominous prognostic sign. Nobody’s mentioning that fact, though it’s in the music of almost every report. If he chooses to be private about the extent of his illness, he’d be best advised to stay out of the public spotlight.
