Look-up Tables for the Curious

Look up FDA and Patent data by a drug’s proprietary name…
Look up clinical trials for drugs according to a variety of parameters…
Look up NIH/NIMH Grants using the RePORTER Query form…
Look up payments to physicians from pharmaceutical companies in the ProPublica Dollars for Docs database…

In a recent post [local news…], I was describing a local Atlanta news story about Doctors making money on the side by giving talks for drug companies. On it, they interviewed Dr. Michael Banov, a local Psychiatrist who is a Psychopharmacology type. I read the transcript rather that watching the video. When I later watched the video, there were some things he said that I found odd:
  • “I think my patients welcome the fact they have a doctor who is meeting other doctors, actively involved in research, actively communicating with other physicians. Someone who’s on top of the game.”
  • “And Banov says, the drug company – not him – creates the materials used in his speeches, and he says there’s a reason for that. ‘We are only able to present the data. We’re not able to present our personal opinions. Our personal preferences, how we use the medication off label. any of that. So we’re held to a very tight standard by the FDA,’ said Banov.”
If he’s only presenting what the drug company wants him to say, how’s that “… actively involved in research, actively communicating with other physicians. Someone who’s on top of the game.“? Strange…
