When I read what the WHO-sites on the review of the ICD-10 classification system, closely related to the DSM-system, are saying about the ongoing process, continuity is an expressed aim. And that’s what I get from the lists of members of the Topic Advisory Group for mental health, chaired by Steven Hyman, formerly head of the NIMH. The chairs of the topic advisory groups make up the steering committee, headed by another American, Christopher G. Chute, with additional top representatives of the WHO etc… Continuity is what to expect from the most highly placed and recruited KOLs.
The need for alternative thinking and alternative approaches to mental suffering and disability, rapidly on the rise in Europe and the USA, as fallout from the economic crisis, will not come from the people at the top. It must come from those who suffer the consequnces of greed and irresponsible politics. The medicine is politics for the common good, and I do not see much hope that this will be comming from the USA anytime soon, as demonstrated by what happened to outspoken Dixie Chicks, and politics as usual in Washington DC. Continuity is not what we, the majority, need, but politics for the common good..
