the times they are a changing…

  1. So, in the post below [death by "The Google!"], we were looking at the White House altering its Office of Administration Web Page to back up their [new] claim that this office is immune to Freedom of Information Act [FOIA] queries. The "cached" version is now dated September 2, 2007 and is here. As you know, the cached page is overwritten as the Google bots recheck the page. When I first looked at it Monday night, the cache was dated 08/07/2007. Yesterday, it was dated 08/11/2007. Now it’s at 09/02/2007. Pretty soon the cach will catch up and be the same as the main page, and it’s moving fast. Best I can tell, that means it was altered on Labor Day. I guess things just change…
  2. Something else that’s changing is Senator Larry Craig‘s maybe resignation. TPM‘s got it parsed out, but here’s the sequence in summary:
    • 08/27/2007: Roll Call reports that Craig was arrested in June in a Minneapolis Airport bathroom soliciting sex and had pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
    • 08/28/2007: Craig holds a Press conference explaining his innocence, blaming his plight on the investigation by the Idaho Statesman.
    • 09/01/2007: He calls a wrong number and leaves a message he thinks is going to his lawyer that in his "resignation" speech, he will equivocate because Arlen Specter called and offered his support.
At a Press Conference, he announces that he "intends" to resign 09/30/2007.
    • 09/02/2007: Arlen Specter is on Fox News saying he would like to see Craig fight his conviction and try to stay in the Senate.
    • 09/05/2007: Today, GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell has announced that if Craig can get the Minneapolis Case reversed, he’ll not resign and will continue in the Senate and deal with the Ethics Investigation there.
  3. Another change: Since January when President Bush responded to the Iraq Study Group’s recommendations to pull out of Iraq by announcing the Surge [sending more troops], we’ve heard nothing but "wait until September" to evaluate things. The Reports are coming next week from General Petraeus and Ambassador Croker. We’ve seen article after article about how there are no real signs that the Surge has had much of an impact on the Iraqi situation. But, we’ve already learned that Bush has made up his mind to continue. He’s saying "wait until October or November." September isn’t turning out to be what he meant to say after all.

The technique here is tell people whatever you need to tell them to get them off your back, then change it later. The formal term used to describe this technique is "LYING". The "LIE" has been used periodically by politicians over the centuries, but our modern Republicans have moved it to the front of their playbook…
