During his questioning of Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker, Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) said that, because of the Iraq war, “we’re at a point where we’re really strained and stressed out.” “I hate to agree with Sen. Feingold,” he added, “but I think Osama bin Laden is sitting back right now looking at this thing [and saying] in effect, ‘We’re kinda bankrupting this country.’ We are eating our seed corn. We’ve got some really big problems today, and we are in a recession, and God only knows how long we’re gonna be in it.”
Voinovich argued that the course in Iraq should consist of the U.S. telling its Middle East allies, “Hey guys, we’re on our way out.” We need “a surge in diplomacy,” he added. “The American people have had it up to here.”
I knew nothing of this Senator from Ohio. I didn’t know his voting record or his story. But I know that on April 8th, 2008, he represented the people of the United States in fine style. I thought maybe he was channelling the spirit of some former truth-sayer. But when I look, he’s one of the few Republicans in Congress who seems to think independently, like some Republicans of old. Yesterday was either his finest hour, or he’s been kept out of the lime-light here-to-for. He even opposed John Bolton, a true sign of a principled man. And he said the "R Word" without stumbling…
