Besieged by blog rumors about her 17-year-old daughter, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — named Friday as running mate of John McCain — released a statement Monday saying her daughter is pregnant and plans to marry the father. The governor and her husband, Todd, said their daughter Bristol plans to keep the baby.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that, as parents, we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned," the Palins said in the statement. "As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."…
For weeks, advisers close to the campaign said, Mr. McCain had wanted to name as his running mate his good friend Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, the Democrat turned independent. But by the end of last weekend, the outrage from Christian conservatives over the possibility that Mr. McCain would fill out the Republican ticket with Mr. Lieberman, a supporter of abortion rights, had become too intense to be ignored.
With time running out, and after a long meeting with his inner circle in Phoenix, Mr. McCain finally picked up the phone last Sunday and reached Ms. Palin at the Alaska State Fair. Although the campaign’s polling on Mr. McCain’s potential running mates was inconclusive on the selection of Ms. Palin — virtually no one had heard of her, a McCain adviser said — the governor, who opposes abortion, had glowing reviews from influential social conservatives…
At 11 a.m. on Thursday, at the McCain vacation compound near Sedona, Ariz., Mr. McCain invited Ms. Palin to join him on the ticket. He hardly knew her, and she had virtually no foreign policy experience, but Ms. Palin was a “kindred spirit,” a McCain adviser said. Mr. McCain was betting, the adviser said, that she would help him reclaim the mantle of maverick that he had lost this year…
Why Palin? McCain v. Rove
by Sidney BlumenthalWhy did John McCain select Sarah Palin as his running mate? The real reason is that he made an impulsive decision to prove his independence in reaction to pressure from Karl Rove, who was lobbying for Mitt Romney, as I explain in a forum on Firedoglake.com on my new book, The Strange Death of Republican America: Chronicles of a Collapsing Party…
My information is that Karl Rove wanted Romney and pushed him. McCain pushed back. He really wanted Lieberman. That was completely out of the question. Palin is the result. One element of the Palin nomination is McCain establishing himself apart from the Bush/Rove political operation, even as his campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, is one of their creatures. From the outside, it’s often hard to figure out how vicious and divided the Republicans can be with each other…
I don’t particularly like Joe Lieberman. It’s not so much his Conservativism. It’s his connection with the Neoconservatives and his Zionism. I think his allegiance to Isreal stands in front of his allegiance to the United States. Privately, when his name comes up, I quip that he’s a Massad Agent. I have no basis to say that, but it expresses how I see him.

John McCain is not a Christian Conservative. Why does it matter what they think?

Why is Karl Rove involved in this decision?
Maybe I haven’t been listening to the “right” stations, but Ann Coulter has been awfully quiet. I wonder what that’s about. I’m shocked that she hasn’t been crowing from the rooftops about what a great woman Palin is.
I am amused by the whole hypocrisy of it all. The Republican blabbermouths (Rush, Coulter, etc) are always talking about how mothers need to stay at home and take care of their children and now here is this super conservative woman who just had a chld running for VP!! On top of that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant and unwed! It’s like a really bad soap opera.
