last gasp…

Posted on Wednesday 3 September 2008

I just watched Minority Leader Boehner at the RNC Convention with a gaggle of Republican Congressmen who are staging a protest to get Speaker Pelosi to reconvene Congress to set up some kind of energy policy they call "all of the above." They called Pelosi’s 110th Congress the "do-nothing" Congress. Oh yeah, the "all of the above" plan includes [with emphasis] off-shore oil exploration.

Even though it has been made clear that:
  • Off-shore drilling could not possible produce oil for years even if they started drilling tomorrow.
  • Our off-shore oil reserves are minimal and could never solve our oil needs.
These points have been acknowledged by the President, the Vice President, and John McCain [who said off-shore drilling might have some "psychological value"].

Yet, the Republican have made off shore drilling a cause celebre` mentioned by President Bush last night and this gang of Republican Congressmen today. Why? It’s just what they do. It’s a way to blame the Democrats for the oil prices diverting attention from the real do-nothing Congress of 2000-2006 [1994-2006]. And it is a way of ignoring the fact that Dick Cheney’s oil policy from his conference two weeks into the Bush Administration involved invading Iraq and stealing her oil.

But the main reason for this big push for off-shore drilling? It puts money in the pockets of the big oil interests that run the Republican Party. It’s like the crazy pharmaceutical ads, "Ask your Congress if off-shore oil drilling is right for you." These people are whores for big business trying with their last gasp to keep their rape of America alive…
