I had the strangest sensation just now. I tried to watch Bush’s goodbye speech [I failed, leaving somewhere in the middle, not from anger but from boredom]. But while I was watching, I noticed that his voice didn’t quite sound right. At first, I thought it was because he was reading a speech from the teleprompter. I never listen to his speeches. I read them later as transcripts so I only hear him in press conferences or occasionally in interviews.
But it wasn’t that. His voice sounded familiar, like someone else. I closed my eyes and listened, and it was immediately apparent. He sounded exactly like Ronald Reagan! If you see a replay, try it. It was uncanny. It’s possible that my [not unconscious] association of Bush/Cheney with Reagan/Bush had something to do with it. I considered that he was either channeling Reagan or it was a reincartation, but I guess it was just something in my head.
I felt empty while he was talking. He’s just a guy who should have never been in the White House except as his father’s son visiting when he was younger. It’s a damn shame that he couldn’t find some buisness that he could’ve been successful in to have a career that protected him from politics, or protected us from him. Maybe he could have been a sportscaster [though those people usually start out in sports]. He could’ve maybe run a mountain bike shop. He seems to enjoy that kind of thing. I remember a guy who ran a bait shop where fishermen hung out near our house who was very much like Bush. He could have done that. But not President of the United States. He didn’t have a chance. Nor did we.
