Bush: “decent” and “reverent”…

Posted on Monday 2 February 2009

While much of the attention on Rush Limbaugh has focused on his stated desire to see President Obama fail, he has also been going around trying to secure President Bush’s legacy. Yesterday, for example, he appeared on Fox’s Hannity’s America and tried to argue that Bush wasn’t at all partisan:
RUSH: Well, I think he’s a decent man. He thought it was irreverent to turn the Oval Office, or the Office of the Presidency, into a partisan strategic battle place…
Yes, you know, domestic policy, he did some things that puzzled us – creating a new entitlement, the whole immigration thing, signing campaign finance reform. But he’s a good man. He’s not hated.

Where to start? "He thought it was irreverent to turn the… Office of the Presidency, into a partisan strategic battle place…" The obvious absurdity of that statement is overwhelming. The Office of the Presidency was, at times, only "a partisan strategic battle place." But beyond that ridiculous assertion, if Rush were so proud of Bush being so non-partisan, what does he mean by "he did some things that puzzled us – creating a new entitlement, the whole immigration thing, signing campaign finance reform."? Who is "us" and why did these things "puzzle us"? "Us" is Republicans and they were puzzled because he was doing a few non-Republican things. They anticipated him doing only Republican things. That means that they expected the White House to be a "a partisan strategic battle place" and that Bush occasionally veered off course [to their "puzzle"-ment"].

But pointing out Rush’s logical inconsistencies isn’t much fun anymore. They’re monotonous. This is a classical Karl Rove Talking Point. Take something you are doing and accuse the other side of doing it. They are trying to turn the Stimulus Package into a Democrat Program rammed down their throats. The reason it is a Democrat Program is because their participation, even when asked, is minimal. But the main reason is that all of them are voting against it. They know Obama wants their participation and ideas and they’re determined not to give him anything. Like Rush, they want him to fail. They are trying to create a situation where they can paint the White House as being a "a partisan strategic battle place" although, in truth, Obama is desparately trying to get them to participate responsibly and they are refusing. They will not give up the divisive position.

And the idea that the Bush Administration represents the good old days, a time of reverence and decency is almost too ludicrous to comment on. Such baloney might hold on to their base, but is unlikely to bring in many converts. Americans aren’t stupid. And it has barely been two weeks. The Inauguration must have scared the hell out of the Republicans, because they are way premature with this kind of craziness. It’s insulting…
