In the summer of 1963, "Freedom Summer," people flocked to the South to register black voters. At least three of them died in Mississippi at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan. It wasn’t a question of campaigning for anyone particular, it was just getting them registered to vote. In the end of the 1990’s, Karl Rove used the same tactic. He found a constituency and got them voting.
If the 18 to 34 year old’s percentages were just raised to meet those of the older age groups, I reckon they’d vote heavily for who we’d like them to vote for, and it would change the outcome of most elections in the country – certainly all of those 51% to 49% cliff hangers.
Does anyone have to get killed to get them registered? I don’t think so, because it could be done with the Internet and Pop Culture – both non-fatal. Simply make it Cool to Register and Vote…
Statistics from 2004: The voters are in the darkest green. The unregistered people are in the lightest green. The percentages are voters/total.
