or not…

Posted on Saturday 9 September 2006

I just looked at the news and blog comments about the "Path to 911" movie, and I got to say, I’m confused. I’m not confused about the Director being part of a Religious Right mission to do something not so up front in Hollywood. That part seems clear enough. I’m not so confused about the inclusion of certain scenes that never happened that implicate the Clinton Administration in ignoring the al Qaeda threat – apparently that is just plain fact – the scenes are there in the movie, sure enough. Now, President Bush is making a speech right in the middle of the movie, on September 11th. So, I’m not confused that this film is a smear tactic heavily influenced by the Religious [and other] Right, and it is at least temporally connected with President Bush’s pre-Midterm Election campaign to justify the War in Iraq and his War on Terror. That part isn’t confusing.

What’s confusing is that this stupid movie has become a preoccupation. Clinton’s gone ballistic. The blogs are ballistic, left and right. Clinton and Monica are back in the news. The Democratic Administration from that period is on the defensive. It reminds me of Ed Muskey, back in the Nixon days when dirty tricks were young, or McCain and the made-up illegitimate baby, or Kerry during the Swiftboat incident. Maybe I wasn’t wrong, after all. Is this the ‘fog of war’ that Rove and his pals always strew along the path? Ignoring it feels like a mistake. Taking it on feels like a mistake. An impossible situation, out of the blue, based on nothing of substance?

Feels mighty familiar…
