Behind Public Optimism on Iraq, Administration Had Doubts
We’re so used to the kind of thing Woodward documents here from the Bush Administration that we may miss the larger point of his revelations. This is Treason, plain and simple:
Section. 3. Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.
Withholding information about the true state of a foreign war from the American people is giving aid to the enemy, by not allowing us the information that might allow us to act to either cut our losses or to change the way we are fighting the war. In this case, it is a doubly devious act, because we were sold on this war based on equally false information. This isn’t just the exposure of someone lying, like an errant husband or a corporate executive, this is the willful manipulation of information by government to the governed people. And it’s not little white lies, it’s big black lies – just like the ones told in the lead up to the war in the first place.
