up, down, up, down…

One friend says, "My biggest worry now is that the election results will be manipulated for them to win, that we will know it is true and yet be unable to do anything about it (like in the Florida recount). I think there’s plenty of evidence that it’s a reasonable response to reality. If the election doesn’t turn things around, I’m not sure how I can stand it."
Another says, "…I can see where both sides are lying through their teeth on this story. I am becoming more aware of why so many used-to-be voters are no longer clamoring to the polls to vote their favorite candidate into office. I’m almost to that point myself. THERE ARE NO FAVORITE CANDIDATES ANYMORE!"
What I feel is jittery. I read the polls that say things are going to change, and I want them to be quiet – afraid they’ll jinx it. And like the second comment, I’m not sure that I know what I’m voting for, like the craziness has infected them us all.

Furry LewisIt’s just been too much for too long. We’re a nation of traumatized cynics. What made us this way? 9/11? Bin Laden? Bush? The War? Foley? Dead soldiers? All of it? or just plum wore out? Barring the appearance of a Superman, I guess we’re just going to have to muddle our way through, refind what we can of what we used to have, or maybe create some new things.

Reminds me of an old blues tune [Furry Lewis] that became a book title [Richard Farina]: "been down so long, it looks like up to me". I guess those Mississipi Delta Blues and words from the Beat Generation speak to us across time from other dark days…
