Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, now Ted Haggard – the question is "why does it work?" In 2000 and 2004, this group of people actually elected a President of the United States, a man as flawed and unsuited for his job as they are. I’m not actually sure I know how it works, but I do know what we’ve seen, over and over. It does seem to work for a while…

These are not great men. They gather their flocks of people by selling a simplistic ways of viewing the world that invariably rely on something from the past as guides to the future, biblical stories of prophets and  judges, "good ole time religion." They whisk away modern problems with ancient solutions. It’s an easy way to see the world. They rely on enemies, some great sea of other human beings who don’t see the world clearly, who are motivated by something called "evil." They tout the Christian Bible, but miss its essential teachings.

These are not great men either. They gather their flocks of people by selling a simplistic ways of viewing the world that invariably rely on something from the past as guides to the future, stories of previous presidents, "American values." They whisk away modern problems with ancient solutions. It’s an easy way to see the world. They rely on enemies, some great sea of other human beings who don’t see the world clearly, who are motivated by something called "evil." They tout the Constitution, but miss its essential message.
