I know that I’ve been a bit too focused lately on the Ted Haggard and Mark Foley scandals. The reason is that in looking into them, I’ve been reading the Religious Right’s web sites – particularly James Dobson’s Focus on the Family and Louis Sheldon’s Traditional Values Coalition. There’s a theme that I thought was only implied, that homosexuals [called homosexual activists or radical homosexuals] are actively working on recruiting the youth of America to become homosexual. It’s hard to exactly figure out their theory, since homosexuals [as well as the Psychiatry and Psychology scientific communities] believe that homosexuality is biological. How would one do this kind of recruitment or "turning" if it is biologic? But that’s just the start of it. There are several beliefs that run through the rhetoric of both sites:
- homosexuals want to convert children to homosexuality
- the campaign for ‘normalization; of homosexuality is part of a recruitment program
- homosexuals are ‘motivated’ to destroy the traditional family
That’s very bizarre. They ignore the obvious, that’s homosexuals are fighting to be recognized. These groups are saying that it’s a smokescreen for an underlying plot to destroy the traditional family and convert kids to homosexuality. Why would these people say such things? It just doesn’t make any sense. It’s frankly paranoid.
I suppose that it explains a lot – like why they’re so afraid of gay Civil Unions, or accepting gay people into their churches. They think that homosexuals want to hurt them and steal their children. But it’s an apocolyptic crackpot theory at best.
