One of the sad things to me has been the indifference shown to the Bush takeover of America, particularly the indifference of young people. I’m from the 60s and early 70s when the ‘good fight’ was just part of our life – neighborhood politics, local politics, state politics, national politics. It has seemed like the young adults are asleep. They’re the ones that matter. It’s their passion, their kid’s futures, their country that’s on the line.
But I’ve spent today watching the Young Turks filabuster for the filabuster, and I’ve been reading the political blogs that are everywhere, and it’s made me feel terrific. Like there is a connection between my own youthful enthusiasm and the present generation who need to be raising holy hell about what’s happening. It’s going to take their energy to break through the torpor that’s allowed this neofascist neoconservative Administration to do immeasurable damage to our fundamental freedoms. But what I’ve heard today is wiping away my sadness at the lack of involvement. These people are on fire, and it’s great to listen!
What I want to see now is the same kind of energy from the responsible religious community. Their teachings were a strong influence on all of us, whether we stayed with the church or not. What is now passed off as christianity doesn’t deserve to be capitalized in a sentence. I’m sure that the majority of christians are not behind the cancer that the religious right has become. But where is the sane voice of Jesus in this current rhetoric? Stop worrying about your building funds and start worrying about the country that gave you a place to worship. Let’s hear christian principles instead of political theocracy. Cleaning out the religious right is the job of christianity as a whole. Get busy!

There’s no threat of conscription, yet.
