public servants?

Posted on Monday 13 February 2006

I’m trying to decide how I would feel if Al Gore were still Vice President and he’d shot a fellow hunter on a quail hunt in our homeland Tennessee. It’s hard, because straight-arrow Al would’ve called a press conference and announced it himself in front of the hospital. I’m pretty sure that’s right. Actually, as I write this, it’s a little hard to imagine Al out hunting in the first place. He’d be out there looking at the beauty of nature, going on and on [and on] about environmental issues – feeding the quail. Maybe he’d shoot a few pictures.

In fact, it’s a bit hard to envision Al Gore spending much time pursuing his hobbies while on the job. While we joke about it a lot, it’s something of a serious point that the President is often in Texas hot dogging on his bike and clearing brush while Cheney’s on his compound in Wyoming or the Chesapeake or on a hunting trip. The question is which is the hobby? golfing, hunting, biking, etc. or running the country?

I think that’s how I actually see them. If Bush or Cheney were really serious about running the country, they wouldn’t have treated it so lightly – starting a real war based on the lame theories of their loonie think-tank pals, or eavesdropping on real Americans just because they could, or outing a real C.I.A. Agent to get back at her husband. I don’t think they are taking us seriously, or their jobs seriously.

They’re living the life of the idle rich, which is fine with me. But most such people do it without passing themselves off as public servants [I choke on those words]. Public Servants…

    “NAME THAT TACTIC” ~Is it “blowback” “echo-chamber(ing)” or regular ‘ole-everyday SPIN?

    On November 24, 2003, Stephen F. Hayes wrote an article claiming a link between Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Hayes claimed that a leaked US Government document was the source of his information. Given what Bush himself has admitted about the Osama/Saddam link, that it did not exist, either Hayes was lying through his teeth, or the documnent he worked from was a US Government fake.

    ~Editor’s Note, 1/27/04: In today’s Washington Post, Dana Milbank reported that “Vice President Cheney . . . in an interview this month with the Rocky Mountain News, recommended as the ‘best source of information’ an article in The Weekly Standard magazine detailing a relationship between Hussein and al Qaeda based on leaked classified information.”

    Here’s the Stephen F. Hayes article to which the vice president was referring.

    …OSAMA BIN LADEN and Saddam Hussein had an operational relationship from the early 1990s to 2003 that involved training in explosives and weapons of mass destruction, logistical support for terrorist attacks, al Qaeda training camps and safe haven in Iraq, and Iraqi financial support for al Qaeda–perhaps even for Mohamed Atta–according to a top secret U.S. government memorandum obtained by THE WEEKLY STANDARD.

    The memo, dated October 27, 2003, was sent from Undersecretary of Defense for Policy DOUGLAS J FEITH to Senators Pat Roberts and Jay Rockefeller, the chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

    Lordy. Donald Feith is the archvillian of all times! He was moved out of gonernment very abruptly under mega-hushed whispers. Kristol, Hayes, Feith, the rogues gallery is almost all there. Add Mylroie and Ledeen and the dark actor perfecta would be represented…
