one fine day…

Posted on Tuesday 4 July 2006

What did July 4th, 2006 do for me? Two big things:

  • First: I’ve been kind of discouraged since Karl Rove walked away from Plamegate. I guess I understand why he walked, but I don’t think for a minute that he is innocent of lying to the Grand Jury, and probably more. But as I reviewed the last year’s progress [below: my year…], I felt a lot better.
  • Second: Since yearlyKos I’ve been worried about the fate of the blogs that have become so important to me in following what I consider a dreadful state of affairs in Washington. It’s almost like what was good about the meeting is the same thing that was bad about it. There was all that schmoozing with the Democrats. But then there was the analogy, the blogosphere has become the talk-radio of the Left. Yuck! I hope not. But then there’s all the jargon – pet names for unliked Congressmen and reporters, slang like wingnuts and trolls, stuff that sounded a lot like Rush, Michelle, and Ann. It felt like this sort of in-crowd supporters-only slang was taking over. My own opinion is that the blogosphere has been really strong in reasoned arguments, really good satire, keen analysis. There were too many so-and-so over at such-and-such says this-and-that nasty thing about he-and-she. Some of that is fine, but I’ve been thinking that the line between convincing political thought and shit-throwing fun was getting crossed. Then today, there have been a great series of posts almost everywhere, harkening to our founders, sticking to the issues, thinking about where to go next. It’s been great to read, and encouraging that the people involved aren’t going to let this become an MTV-like minority having talk-radio fun that doesn’t contribute to the unseating of the lunatics that have seized our government.

One fine July 4th online in my book…
