Well, here it comes. Bush transfers prisoners from the unacknowledged "secret prisons" and undoes the torture thing. Today, we hear that we all owe Karl Rove an apology for thinking he was a bad guy. The last couple of weeks, there have been non-stop speeches on the War-on-Terror-in-Iraq-about-911. The blogs are all refutations of the day-before speeches [including mine]. So, here it comes. And it’ll keep coming until November. I wonder who is in charge of fanning the Religious Right flames, who is scheduled to go to Wheaton Bible college or Bobby Jones University?
God gave Noah the Rainbow sign.
No more water, there’ll be fire next time.
Keep your eyes on the Prize, Oh Lord…
I don’t particularly think ranting about all of this will make much difference. Politicians like Karl Rove know what they’re doing. It’s what he does. And, so far, it’s worked for them. In November 2004, he was able to pump things up like this, the "bump" below:
Then, it was Swift-Boating, Flip-Floping, Lib’rul talk. Now we’re back to Fear, Patriotism, Concessions, and tireless Stumping. Will it work? I don’t know. But I do know that defensive ranting won’t stop it. No matter what Mr. Rove cooks up, part of his equation is getting a rise out of his opposition that undermines their own effective message. The liberal bloggers are trying to respond correctly. Our side is learning too. Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake has dropped the non-stop anti-Lieberman banter. Steve Soto at the left coaster is warning about reacting. Harry Reid didn’t fall in the soup.
Will it work this time? I hope not. The thing that will beat it is the people’s being "on to them." Is that going to happen? I sure hope so. I frankly think the ABC 911 movie that blames Clinton won’t work. Not because of its "wrongness." I think it won’t work because we don’t want to watch it – don’t want to see those towers fall anymore. We relive it in our trips to the airport and our nightmares already. But I do wonder how they brought it off, getting a made-up movie made for election season.
It’s interesting to read the comments in the blogs. We armchair pundits are of two minds – "don’t take the bait" and "fight the good fight." I guess I’m drawn to Group A, though I honestly think that we just don’t have that much influence. We’re in the "what will be, will be" phase of the Bush Era, in my opinion. It’s been a good year for our team. Was it good enough? We’ll see…
