Well, it seems that I was wrong as rain. What was I wrong about, you ask? Bush being a terrible President? No, not that. Something else…
For the last couple of days, I’ve been worrying that the blogsphere was falling in a trap, going so hog-wild about this "Path to 911" movie and its distorted view of history. I thought we were getting off track, sort of like what happened with the Swiftboat Veterans. I wanted the focus to stay on the War on Terror/War in Iraq connection that Bush and friends are stumping everywhere. I thought the movie was kind of a dead end.
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! The movie, it seems, was directed by David L. Cunningham who is part of the "Film Institute" which is part of "Youth With A Mission" – an evangelical Christian Organization, which tries to place its students "within the film industry, not to give them jobs, but so that they can begin to impact and transform Hollywood from the inside out." As a matter of fact, David Cunningham is the son of the organization’s founder, Loren Cunningham. see TPMmuckraker, dailyKos, democraticunderground, and digby. Apparently, all references to this project have been purged from the "Youth With A Mission" web site [today], but the references are cached so they are available. There seems to be an attempt to cover up that this ABC Disney film is a Religious Right disinformation operation extrordinaire. And now this from Huffington Post, the enlarging, sordid tale about the path to "The Path to 911:"
In fact, "The Path to 9/11" is produced and promoted by a well-honed propaganda operation consisting of a network of little-known right-wingers working from within Hollywood to counter its supposedly liberal bias. This is the network within the ABC network. Its godfather is far right activist David Horowitz, who has worked for more than a decade to establish a right-wing presence in Hollywood and to discredit mainstream film and TV production. On this project, he is working with a secretive evangelical religious right group founded by The Path to 9/11’s director David Cunningham that proclaims its goal to "transform Hollywood" in line with its messianic vision.
