Hurricane Dennis…

Dennis Hastert [R-Illinois] has been Speaker of the House since 1999 when Newt Gingrich [R-Georgia] resigned [Ethics charges]. Whoops. I left out the brief tenure of Bob Livingston [R-Louisiana] who resigned after an extramarital affair was exposed. During Hastert’s long reign, there have been a few glitches. Duke Cunningham [R-California] resigned after being convicted for bribery. Tom Delay [R-Texas] resigned after being indicted for election fraud. Bob Ney [R-Ohio] resigned after pleading guilty to bribery. Mark Foley [R-Florida] resigned after being exposed as a sexual predator.

With a record like this, one wonders why even he would question the call for him to stand down. But, then again, Newt’s back in the news. I guess the Statute of Limitations has run out on the ethics charges that lead to his resignation. The Republicans are in their 12th year of controlling the House of Representatives and it hasn’t gone so very well for the Immoral Majority…
