Speakers including Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Monday that scandals in Washington should not suppress "values voters" from going to the polls Nov. 7.
"Yes, what Mark Foley did was wrong, but it is still important to go to the polls and let our voices be heard," Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family Action, said at a "Stand for the Family" rally in Nashville, Tenn.
Dobson said a congressman has told him that several other gay Republicans will be "outed" in coming days. He said he doesn’t know who they are, but, "They say it is going to be worse than anything that has happened so far."
[1] "They are dribbling this bad news out so eventually the values voters will get to the point so they will say a pox on both your houses; I’m staying home," Dobson said. "Folks you cannot afford to do that."
The Nashville rally was the third of its kind, following events in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis. All three cities are in states with closely watched elections.
"Our goal is to motivate every single believer, everyone who names the name of Jesus, to be involved in the political process," said Jerry Sutton, pastor of Two Rivers Baptist Church, site of Monday night’s rally.
"We have every intention of out-praying, out-thinking, out-working, out-serving and out-loving our opponents," Sutton said. [2] "And we will by the grace of God make this a Christian nation."
[1] Dobson says this, that "They are dribbling this bad news out …" as if it is a foregone fact. Some "they" [presumably Democrats] are actively timing the release of bad news specifically to their "values voters." I kind of doubt it, but the major point remains unaddressed. The "bad news" isn’t something made up, it isn’t smear tactics maligning an innocent guy, there isn’t a Democratic equivalent of Karl Rove with a bag full of dirt releasing it at just the right moment. But there are some things to talk about. What about Foley? What about Hastert? Has he no interest in the content of this "bad news?"
[2] I don’t recall it being so blatant before – "And we will by the grace of God make this a Christian nation." Sounds like a Shiite Militia leader to me.
I think I’ve been extremely naive. I’ve continued to see these people as religious leaders, maybe a bit deluded, maybe off on a tangent. I think that was wrong. I think they’re simply Grade B, power hungry, charlatans. "What Mark Foley did was wrong, but …" It’s Dobson’s use of "but" that gives him away. "But" it doesn’t really matter – all that morality stuff. We’re after power and that’s what really matters.
"we will … make this a Christian nation." Whatever Reverend Sutton means when he says "Christian" is so far from anything that is related to Christianity as to be unrecognizable. Hypocricy is a much over-used word in religious circles, but these people are pushing the envelope to new vistas. I don’t want Values Voters to stay home. I want them to wake up to their Values and go to the polls and vote for them.
I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians.
Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
