2006  DEMOCRAT REPUBLICAN
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 229 196
SENATE 51 49

Well, we did it. No, not we the Democrats, though that we was unusually effective. No, not the we Americans, though that we was spectacular – made me proud. The we I’m talking about is we, my wife and I. We went camping on top of a mountain in North Georgia in a fog bank in a rain storm. I just couldn’t do another white knuckle night like 2004. It was too … well, just too much. We found out last night on the evening news in a pop-up camper. The Democrats took the House! Rumsfeld’s Out! This morning, the fog and rain were gone. Blue Skies all day long.

Then we came home and found out the Democrats took the Senate! And Bush renominated John Bolton to the U.N., but Lincoln Chafee holds the cards and he says "No!" And, Ken Mehlman’s out [both ways]!

I’ll admit to being weepy about it all day. To quote Furry Lewis, a Memphis Blues great, "I been down so long, it looks like up to me." I have no idea which way the country’s headed, but it can at least stop plummeting down. Praise the forces of … well, whatever collective forces went in to making this happen. Maybe we can start to relearn what it means to be proud of America again…
