George W. Bush |
Richard Cheney |
Karl Rove |
Gone are Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Richard Armitage, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, John Bolton. Gone are Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney, Mark Foley, Jack Abramoff. We’re down to just three, George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, and Karl Rove. Right now, it appears that we’re stuck with them for two more years – two being elected officials. I’m not so sure about that. They’ve lost the respect of the populace. They’ve lost their power base. And they’ve lost their ill conceived war. They’ve done plenty to get them in some real hot water if someone decides to pursue it. The mood of the country is changing. Even their supporters can jump ship right now without losing face.
I think they could slide off the hook if they’d listen to the with the wind, but the simple act of putting Bolton’s name back in the mix for the U.N. even as they were talking bipartisanship at the very same instant with Nancy Pelosi suggests to me that they’re still thinking they can play their brand of poker with a decidedly weakened hand. Aristotle’s Poetics proposes that a well constructed tragedy must rest on a flaw of character that leads to an inevitable fall. All three are in the running in that regard…
