beware of false prophets…

The Christian Right is involved in a spin game of their own. They’re after those Republicans this time. The Republicans just weren’t strong enough on the "values voters" issues:
  • Abortion [killing unborn babies],
  • Gay Marriage [destroying God’s something-or-other],
  • Stem Cell Research [Cloning].
And, by the way, they think there are a lot of homosexuals in the Republican Party, staffers. All of these things are the reason they lost the election. An example:

Americans For Truth President Peter LaBarbera today called on the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) to rescind its “sexual orientation” policy as inconsistent with the GOP’s professed pro-family values, and said pro-“gay” Political Correctness contributed to Sen. George Allen’s narrow loss for re-election in Virginia.

LaBarbera also called on all homosexual staff in both major parties to be open about their lifestyle in the interest of full disclosure to the public and each Member’s constituents.
This is just one version. There are countless others, including the epicenter, James Dobson’s Focus on the Family. This "call for outing" of homosexuals is echoing across Christendom, probably in response to the Mark Foley and Ted Haggard revelations, but it exposes their "true colors." The Christian Right is actively persecuting homosexuals. All of this business about Love in Action, Love Won Out, Praying for Preacher Ted is simply a sugar coating on an active campaign to demonize homosexuals, and blame them for what the Christian Right sees as a degradation of American Culture.

For one thing, it is very, very far from the teachings of Jesus. Jesus never mentioned homosexuality. The Christian Right relies on a passage from the Torah [Leviticus] and a couple of Paul’s letters. But, even more, Jesus never demonized anyone, if anything, quite the opposite. So this monotonous message from the Christian Right has nothing to do with Christianity. It reminds me of the crazy preachers on the radio in the East Tennessee of my childhood talking about the inferiority of the "coloreds." They quoted scriptures too, in between gasps ["suck back" preaching]. It’s the consolidation of power through prejudice.

But, back to the point. The Christian Right is trying to rally their base, and to keep their hateful agendae on the front burner. My guess is that they may well push their homosexual purge in their own ranks as well. Pastor Ted snuck up on them and they need to do some damage control work.

The Christian Right is not going to back off on their own. It’s going to take an implosion to change their status. Will the people who have bought in to this perversion of religion wake up? What force will it take to wake them up? I don’t think it’s going to come from the outside. I think it has to be a wellspring from within.

In the last years of my practice, a friend referred a [megachurch] family in which the teenage son had announced that he was gay. I told my friend that I couldn’t help if what they wanted was to "convert their son," but they wanted to come anyway. I saw the parents. Lovely people who loved their son. They wanted me to talk him out of it. I said that I didn’t know how to do that, but could suggest referrals. They said their son was worn out with Christian advice and wouldn’t go. Would I please talk to him anyway. When the young man showed up, he was the Valedictorian and President of his Class, and he wanted to talk to me about two things: helping his parents with their problem with his homosexuality and about an issue he was having in a relationship. We talked through the latter, and I tried to help with the former, though not with much success. We basically negotiated a truce, which, I suppose, was something of a gain.

These were three very fine people brought into discord by this very issue of homosexuality. If their son had not been born homosexual, they would’ve been the proudest parents possible. I believe if their situation hadn’t been complicated by their religious teachings, they would’ve done fine. I hope that in the intervening years, the parents have reconsidered their rigid stance [homosexuality is a sin]. It was a good family that didn’t need the tragic interjection from, of all things, a church!

But for every kid like this who knows who and what he is, there are many more who are going to grow up with self-loathing and secrecy just like in the past, because of a Christian Right influence that shames them. This needs to stop. That’s all. It just needs to stop. And this resurgence of homosexual persecution is not going to check itself…
