the Libby trial timeline [to date]…

Posted on Thursday 1 February 2007

So, we’ve heard from a number of people who said that they had conversations with Scooter Libby in which Valerie Plame and her C.I.A. employment were discussed. Today, we heard F.B.I. Agent, Deborah Bond, describe her initial interviews with Mr. Libby. In the first, he said that he had learned her status from Tim Russert on July 11 or 12 from newscaster Tim Russert. Later, he recalled that he’d been told by Vice President Cheney around June 12th, but had forgotten until he reviewed his notes.

But we’ve heard a lot more than that! We learned that he was all over Washington trying to ferret out the story of Wilson’s trip. We learned that Rove had told him that people were believing Wilson [July 8th]. We learned that there were repeated discussions about this with Vice President Cheney. And we learned that Mary Matalin had returned to advise them what to do. And that on July 10th, she said, "We need someone who can sum it up. This is fitting into Democratic story. It has legs. The story’s not going away. We need to address Wilson motivation."

So, simply put, it’s impossible to believe that Libby wasn’t deeply involved in damage control on the Wilson story, and it’s ludicrous to suggest that he didn’t remember much about it because he was so busy with other things – absolutely ludicrous.

Listening to the testimony, it’s also impossible for me to believe that with this much activity and investigation, he [they] didn’t know that she was a "secret agent." I know Fitzgerald can’t find anyone to confirm that he knew, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t. Or maybe he didn’t care. Or maybe he knew so little about the government they’re running that it never occurred to him to find out.

What’s coming? The tapes from his Grand Jury appearance; a mystery witness; and then Tim Russert who is going to say he neither knew about Valerie Plame nor told Libby about her.

Pretty damning stuff…
