(b) Sense of Senate.

(1) that the manner in which the United States transitions and structures its military presence in Iraq will have critical long-term consequences for the future of the Persian Gulf and the Middle East, in particular with regard to the capability of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to pose a threat to the security of the region, the prospects for democracy for the people of the region, and the health of the global economy;
(2) that it is a vital national interest of the United States to prevent the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran from turning Shi’a militia extremists in Iraq into a Hezbollah-like force that could serve its interests inside Iraq, including by overwhelming, subverting, or co-opting institutions of the legitimate Government of Iraq;
(3) that it should be the policy of the United States to stop inside Iraq the violent activities and destabilizing influence of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, its foreign facilitators such as Lebanese Hezbollah, and its indigenous Iraqi proxies.
(4) to support the prudent and calibrated use of all instruments of United States National power inside Iraq, including diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and military instruments in support of the policy with respect to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies.
(5) that the United States should designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and place the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists, as established under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and initiated under Executive Order 13224; and
(6) that the Department of the Treasury should act with all possible expediency to complete the listing of those entities targeted under United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1737 and 1747 adopted unanimously on December 23, 2006 and March 24, 2007, respectively.

What possible reason was there for any of these Democratic Senators [or, for that matter, any Senator] to vote for this Amendment knowing full well that it is a prelude Bush and Cheney’s plan to bomb Iran – a Neoconservative plan that antedates their election in 2000?

    These Democrats can’t help themselves because they think rationally and logically and feel that Bush certainly wouldn’t lie us into war again because they themselves wouldn’t do it. Let me tell you right now that I was warming up ro Clinton because she will eventually be the Democratic nominee but I’m so mad I’ve already written my Senators in NJ and I will be calling Reid,Schumer,Casey Clinton’s Offices in DC when their offices are open. Edwards and Dodd have always had my vote.

    I know I’m naive but is this all about Israel? I really respected a lot of the senators on the list. I’d like each and every one of them to answer the questions why and do you trust Bush to do the right thing with the power to go after Iran?

    Joy,

    I have not one clue what this is about. Not one clue. If it’s about Israel, shame on them. If it’s about anything else, shame on them. There’s nothing served by passing this thing, and, as you point out, it’s dangerous fodder for the Administration!

    I just spoke to someone in Senator Clinton’s office and told her how upset I was about her vote for Lieberman/Kyl Amendment and that I don’t like her answer at last nights debate about getting the troops out. I also called Senator Reid’s office and told his worker the same thing. I want Gore. I’m tired of this whole mess we are in and I want someone who knows what the hell is going on.
