rage…

I just watched an older DVR’d Jon Stewart Daily Show – from a couple of weeks ago. He had Jack Goldsmith, the former DOJ Attorney who, with James Comey, stopped Alberto Gonzales and Andrew Card from trying to get John Ashcroft to sign authorizations while he was delerious in the hospital. Goldsmith has written the book, The Terror Presidency, about his DOJ experiences. In the interview, he was an imminently solid and reasonable guy [as was James Comey in his Senate testimony]. What he said was simply the truth. The sleaziness of the Administration was un-necessary. They could have had what they wanted playing it straight, but their first priority, the Imperial Presidency, is what drives them and has, in fact, weakened the Presidency. As much as I enjoy bashing the Administration, I left this interview with tears in the corners of my eyes. Jon Stewart was also muted in the interview. Sometimes, the magnitude of the behavior of this Administration really comes down hard on me, and I feel some emotion that’s between profound sadness and uncomfortable rage. It’s not about Liberalism vs. Conservativism, or Democratic Party vs. Republican Party. It’s about human decency, honesty, and the responsibility of high office. The scene in John Ashcroft’s hospital room encapsulates why so many of us write these posts day after day, in the hope that some one of them from some one of us will wake up another American to the tragedy unfolding in the halls of our government.

Here’s Goldsmith being interviewed by Bill Moyers and Comey’s Senate testimony:
