oh Eliot!

It looks like my thesis that this was "stress" from being in a job he couldn’t handle is evaporating – unless he couldn’t handle the last job either. So much for armchair punditry. Spitzer’s apparently been a john for years, well back into his Attorney General days. And then there’s this, an attack on Mr. Spitzer’s character from a former victim. It looks now like Mr. Spitzer had the madonna prostitute complex. In such cases, the venerated wife is more the "good" girl – a maternal figure. Spitzer’s wife, Silda, is described with words like elegant and gracious – hardly negatives. But she is certainly a "good girl." In Freud’s terms, she is an unavailable Oedipal mother – a Madonna. The prostitute is the "bad girl" – available for sex and illicit fun.

There’s an interesting dichotome in the sexual fantasy industry. Male pornography is populated with young women who are driven to have sex. While they are certainly beautiful, sexy women, their motivation, at least the motivation that’s portrayed in the pornography, is male. They are desirable women with male brains, male hormones, filled with lust. On the other side of the coin, there are the "romance novels" aimed at female readers. In these books, the men are strong, desirable masculine types – but they have female brains. They are driven by love, a love that never fades. In either case, the point of the fantasies is to be the object of overwhelming desire.

Eliot Spitzer, at this moment, is not the object of overwhelming desire. That part’s for sure. I expect he’ll go down in history as something more like "that rat, Eliot Spitzer"…
