weather…

We had us quite a day in Georgia. Last night, a tornado ripped through the center of downtown Atlanta, stopping NCAA Basketball games, flooding CNN, and tearing  up a swathe through the city. This morning, another line of storms woke us up shaking the house and blowing the leaves off the trees. The third wave came later in the morning. Tornados, rare here, lined up like a freight train along I-20 that bisects the State East to West, and just kept on coming. Most of us were glued to Channel 2, WSB, whose weathermen had some new state of the art software that showed these tornados generating themselves in waves across the state. Hail was in the 3.5" range. While most of the dangerous action was south of our mountainous region in North Georgia, about 6PM, a piece came through our area, hell bent for leather. Its tornados were a few miles south of us, but the wind and rain knocked out our electricity for 3 or 4 hours [and unfortunately Channel 2]. Then the sun came out and faded into a beautiful, starlit sky.

I, for one, missed the electricity a lot. It was very comforting to have the T.V. pinpointing those tornados – letting people know when to take cover. The tearful testimonials to the weather coverage were aplenty. There were only two deaths, to my knowledge. Without the technology, there would have been a whole lot more. The Channel 2 weather team is going to win  some well deserved awards for getting out the warnings. I sure missed those warnings when the power went away. Fortunately, the storms up here were over about the time our lights went out. We’ve never ever had a day remotely like this in Georgia’s history, even when the odd Gulf hurricane gets loose and comes up this far [in case you were wondering about global climate change]
