As Congress prepares for next week’s testimony by Army Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, House Republicans are launching what they call a “full-fledged assault on the misinformation campaign promoted by Democratic leaders,” whom they accuse of trying to “legislate defeat” by calling for troop withdrawals.
The first step in the GOP push: House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) will go after the Democrats in a speech Tuesday to American Legion members. After that will come a “steady stream” of “op-eds and editorial board memos,” an “aggressive” TV and radio operation and an effort to “engage conservative bloggers,” according to a strategy memo obtained by Politico.
The Republicans’ message offensive is part of a larger effort to highlight what they see as the success of the “surge” and to help the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona. But the strategy is not without risk. Just as Republicans are pushing to get Iraq back in the headlines, a new wave of violence there is beating them to the punch…
Democrats don’t have to legislate defeat. Bush has already taken care of that for us. "What ‘misinformation’ campaign are they talking about?" he queried. It’ll be interesting to see this campaign, particularly Boehner who is given to crying through his own speeches. While his intent is to engage us with his passion, it comes across differently. I feel like crying when I hear him too, but it’s for different reasons. And sometimes, I find myself laughing. He reminds me of a second tier televangelist. He also brings to mind a beagle I once had with mournful eyes. I wonder what’s going to come of all these Republican clone voters like Boehner if America ever wakes up. We’ve got more than our share of them in Georgia. Hopefully, they’ll all slowly evaporate in the next several elections…
