I have to remind myself that Condi Rice is Secretary of State. That’s the person who is in charge of diplomacy, or at least it used to be. We hear about Condi, "Will she be McCain’s running mate?" or see her as a member of the Royal Court, but we don’t see her out stumping for any kind of diplomatic mission in the Middle East.
I hate the sexism of the analogy, but I sort of see her as something of a trophy wife to Bush – coiffed, well dressed, articulate, but not much of a real force in the government. In a time when we’re clammoring for a "diplomatic surge," she’s not around very much…
