I’ve watched on and off tonight. In the breaks between speakers, they’ve played old rock-and-roll. Republicans can’t dance. They really can’t. They shake signs and weave independent of the beat of the music. It looks like a sock-hop during the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." But the speakers are less interesting. McCain is speaking right now. His speech is remarkable. He’s running against the current Administration and espousing the same policies of the current Administration. It’s all there. Federalist Society, Religious Right, School Vouchers, Militarism, Isolationism, Limbaughism, O’Reillyism, Coulterism, Foxism. The difference, I suppose, is anti-corruptionism. And he’s big on drilling off-shore, knowing that it won’t make any difference. Then he’s off and running with alternative energy sources like anyone would be – even Bush.
I want to like him. But he let us down so many times during the last eight years – sucking up to the Bush Administration after they raped him in the South Carolina Primary. He backed down on all the big ones – Torture, G.I. benefits, etc. He just fizzled out. As I’ve said elsewhere, I speculated that it’s a re-enactment of his P.O.W. experience – standing strong, then "breaking." I don’t doubt his motives or intent. But I do doubt his ability to persevere. And I really question his creepy allegiances – Lindsey Graham, Joe Lieberman, even Sarah Palin – a person for his most important slot being someone he doesn’t even know. I think he’s a pretty isolated guy – a loner. They use the term Maverick to praise him as a free-thinker. But that’s not the first definition:
mav·er·ick (mÄv’É™r-Äk, mÄv’rÄk)
noun-
An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it. One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.
