GOP Graves elected to US House in Georgia runoff
By SHANNON McCAFFREY [AP]ATLANTA — Republican Tom Graves has been elected to the U.S. House in a special election runoff in Georgia. With 67 percent of precincts reporting, unofficial returns show Graves with 59 percent of the vote on Tuesday, defeating Republican Lee Hawkins who had 41 percent.
The 40-year-old Graves will fill the remainder of Nathan Deal’s term that runs through the end of the year. Deal stepped down earlier this year to seek the Republican nomination for Georgia governor. Graves ran with support from the Atlanta Tea Party Patriots, the anti-tax group Club for Growth and Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House.
Reid wins nomination in Nevada primary
By MICHAEL R. BLOOD (AP)LAS VEGAS — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is on his way to a tough November election in Nevada. Reid easily overpowered a field of little-known Democratic challengers Tuesday to win the party’s nomination for a fifth, six-year term.
His primary election win was never in doubt. The senator’s real battle begins after Republicans pick their nominee from a list that includes tea party favorite Sharron Angle, former state Sen. Sue Lowden and businessman Danny Tarkanian.
