Was it because his wife had thrown him out? Was he encouraged by &quot;The Family,&quot; at &quot;C Street,&quot; fellow Religious Right Congressmen who had apparently also been working with Senator John Ensign? The answer, it seems, is much more pedestrian. The State, South Carolina&#8217;s main newspaper, had been sent email between Sanford and his Argentine Lady in December. Apparently, Sanford didn&#8217;t know that. He got off of the plane in Atlanta, and to his surprise was met by a reporter from The State. He gave a bull-shit interview about an adventure trip, get out of the bubble. &quot;When asked if he had been with anyone,&quot; he ended the interview. The paper called and told him about the emails, and by mid-afternoon, Sanford came clean. So, he came clean because he had to.
