There&#8217;s also one on his <strong><font color=\"#990000\">Rx<\/font><font color=\"#000001\">isk<\/font><\/strong> site by Julie Wood [<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.rxisk.org\/pilots-and-antidepressants-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pilots and Antidepressants<\/a>]. Meanwhile, the Psych Listserves and Twitter feeds have been abuzz with speculations that this was an SSRI [or other Psych Med] reaction. David, who has done more than anyone to bring these reactions to our attention, does a yeoman&#8217;s job of laying out how this is likely to play out. So I&#8217;ll stay out of his way on that score, deferring to his expertise, but I do want to briefly comment on a statement he makes along the way:<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\"><em><font color=\"#000001\">There are likely to be a number of features to the current debate.<\/font><\/em><\/div>\n<ul>\n<div align=\"justify\"><em><font color=\"#990000\">First an impression will be created that we know more about these drugs than we in fact do.<\/font><\/em><\/div>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"justify\"><em><strong><font color=\"#000001\">We know almost nothing about what antidepressants actually do<\/font><\/strong><font color=\"#000001\"> &ndash; we still don&rsquo;t know what they do to serotonin. Rather than being effective like an antibiotic, these drugs have  effects &ndash; as alcohol does.<\/font> <strong><font color=\"#000001\">Their primary effect is to emotionally numb.<\/font><\/strong>  <font color=\"#000001\">Patients on them walk a tightrope as to whether this emotional effect is  going to be beneficial or disastrous.<\/font><\/em><\/div>\n<div align=\"right\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/davidhealy.org\/winging-it-antidepressants-and-plane-crashes\/?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+DrDavidHealy+%28Dr.+David+Healy%29\"><em><font color=\"#000001\">Winging it: Antidepressants and Plane Crashes<\/font><\/em><\/a><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div align=\"justify\" class=\"small\">I&#8217;ve never actually read those <strong><em><font color=\"#000001\">bolded<\/font><\/em><\/strong> parts said that way &#8211; <em><strong><font color=\"#000001\">their primary effect is to emotionally numb<\/font><\/strong><\/em> &#8211; but that&#8217;s exactly what I have also concluded on my own that the SSRIs do &#8211; <em><strong><font color=\"#000001\">emotionally numb<\/font><\/strong><\/em>. It&#8217;s just confirming to read it in print.
