a trick…

There’s a trick involved in"Liberal" or "Democrat." I guess I’m both. Most people who read this are probably both. But there’s still a trick involved. The way those terms are flung around these days, they imply some kind of unity of thought, some kind of unified program that’s being supported, some kind of unified vision for the country. Most of my friends are both, yet we argue all the time about politics. We don’t have a single mind about things. I expect there’s as much diversity among us as there used to be between any individual one of us and our Republican friends.

But it’s not that way right now. People talk to us like we’re one person, with some single mind. And I suppose we huddle together as if it’s true in response. People complain that the Democrats don’t have some unified plan to get us out of this mess. Who could have such a plan? The Democrats didn’t get us here. What the hell would that plan be? It really is like getting shot in a hunting accident and then being asked, "Why didn’t you get out of the way?"

In spite of Karl Rove’s contemptuous speeches, we aren’t a thing – we’re a lot of things.
