Pickens County Progress
For the politically committed, tomorrow looms large. General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker nervously await their chance to try to convince us that the Surge is beginning to work in Iraq. The Presidential speechwriters are honing up the speech the President will give us Thursday about "staying the course" in Iraq. Democratic Congressmen, short of enough votes to actually stop this war, will be out in droves countering the President’s speech. The Bloggers will spend hours refuting the Administration’s jury-rigged figures.
But most of the people around here aren’t thinking about all of this very much. The Atlanta Falcons are toast for the season without Michael Vick. The kid down the street shaved four minutes off his 5K time in Cross-Country this weekend. The Mayor is running unopposed and the Sheriff is retiring after 40 years. It’s not long ’til Fall. We’ve had so little rain, the leaves probably won’t have much color this year. Gas prices are down. The patriotic stickers and magnetic yellow ribbons are mostly gone from the cars, except for a few faded ones on the bumpers of old trucks. No one much seems to care about Iraq or the Circus in Washington this week. If they do, we sure don’t hear much about it on the streets. I guess it’s All Quiet on the Western Front…
