the good news…

Posted on Thursday 16 December 2010

With all of this gloomy talk of ghost-writing and pharmaceutical industry influence in academic medicine and continuing medical education, there’s a counterpoint that is extremely positive. Propublica has an Internet site where you can see the amounts being paid to any physician by the pharmaceutical companies. Right now there are seven companies represented, but by 2013 all of them will have to make this information avaliable. Many Medical Schools are developing sites to make these conflicts of interest transparent for their faculties – for example, the University of Miami Site.

And I think this next one is terrific from the American Medical Student Association. They now grade the Medical Schools on their policies concerning industry involvement at their schools. I’ve posted an abbreviated version below. The full scorecard is here [Medical Students represent medicine’s future]. And finally, there are a number of blogs that track matters pharmaceutical: Healthcare Renewal, Pharmalot, the Carlat Psychiatry blog, PharmedOut, POGO, Soulful Sepulcher, Furious Seasons, and many more. The  pharmaceutical invasion of academic medicine seems to be moving out from under the rocks into the light of day at last…

What the results mean…
