Articles like this one kind of piss me off. An American hegemony in the Middle East was a dream of Dick Cheney and the Neoconservatives [including the Bushes]. With the fall of Russian Communism, we were going to jump into the ring and claim Sole Superpower Status, ignore the U.N., and replace it with us. What hubris! With the end of the Cold War, the strangle-hold on the world by the US vs USSR standoff was removed and the rest of the world could get on with its business. If that weren’t definitive, our little foray into Iraq can hardly be seen as anything but an attempt to establish the exact self-serving hegemony that I’m sure the Arabs feel like they can do without. Me too…
