So, in the 60’s, I didn’t "go to Canada," but I am going tomorrow – on a twelve day vacation. I was reading the last couple of days worth of Lamont versus Lieberman campaign stories and they reminded me of those days. The last campaign we were involved in before I was invited into the Air Force [1971] back then was the midterm Al Gore race [Al Gore Senior]. It was the nastiest of campaigns. Al Gore was beaten by a conservative guy from my home town, Bill Brock. We didn’t know it in 1970, but we later learned it was the first "dirty tricks" campaign – a harbinger of the dirty tricks that became standard currency in the 1972 election.
from CNN‘s Democracy in America: "Albert Gore Sr. represented Tennessee for 32 years. He was first elected to the House in 1938 and moved to the Senate in 1952. His main legislative accomplishment was his work on the Senate bill that authorized the creation of the national interstate highway system. But he became well-known for his progressive views on civil rights and his opposition to the Vietnam War."

The Lamont Lieberman race in Connecticut has turned really nasty like it did in Tennessee back then. People are hurling things at each other at this point. Some of those things aren’t so savory, aren’t so true. The Lamont supporters are following the Lieberman bus with their "kiss" float. The Lieberman supporters are "heckling" at Lamont’s appearances. Mud is being slung from both directions. The blogs from both sides are too-much, and too-mean. It’s not pretty, no matter which side one is on, and neither side is taking the high road. Both are trying to play some version of the "race card." Forty years have passed, and it’s still as divisive and contentious, still about unjust war, race, conservative versus liberal this-and-that. Forty years, and we’re still in the same wilderness.
